Sustainability & Waste Management – Technical Lead

Location: Birmingham

Salary: £32,864 (based on experience)

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

HSSMI is a rapidly growing business delivering innovative engineering expertise and solutions to accelerate sustainable manufacturing. We work across a number of strategic areas solving challenges related to increasing productivity, facility scale-up and creating a circular economy. We are customer focused, establishing tools and processes to help manufacturers develop and grow their production capability. Our projects are both R&D and commercially led, operating within the automotive, marine and aerospace sectors.

The Engineering Team in Birmingham currently deliver high profile manufacturing engineering projects in the Midlands. We work closely with customers looking to scale-up their production facility and support the implementation of new technology, including powertrain electrification.

Our areas of work include manufacturing design, optimisation and scale up, as well as optimising supply chain solutions to integrate into the Manufacturing process. We have a focus on sustainable end of life for products and waste, looking at ways to encourage a re-cycle / re-use approach for all materials.

HSSMI is looking for a Sustainability & Waste Management Technical Lead, to shape and lead our work. Candidates should have experience in sustainable manufacturing processes, solutions to industrial waste and supply chain development. A good knowledge of manufacturing processes and techniques, whilst also possessing a strong understanding of lean supply chain methodology and how it can integrate with production processes would be beneficial. It would be highly advantageous for candidates to possess some knowledge of sustainable materials, Batteries and Electric Motor technology.

Responsibilities of the Sustainability & Waste Management – Technical Lead:

  • Execute programmes and projects for customers to support their ambition, gaining the confidence of customers by delivering exceptional value.
  • Embody teamwork and work collaboratively with the company-wide engineering teams.
  • Develop HSSMI’s internal knowledge and capabilities through cross functional collaboration.
  • Train and mentor staff on best-practice and improve their understanding of key methodologies and processes.
  • Actively create outputs that deliver a high value to customers and promote HSSMI innovation.
  • Present clear outputs and issue reports to customers and stakeholders as required.
  • Regularly represent HSSMI outcomes of projects and strategic aims at local and international events.
  • Support the Commercial Team with customer visits, technology presentations, high-quality bid/proposal writing and marketing events.
  • Hold brainstorming sessions to identify solutions to meet customer objectives and work with stakeholders at all stages of the R&D or commercial submission process.
  • Liaise with both senior management and technical team members within customers and establish productive, professional relationships.
  • Understand, protect and exploit arising intellectual property.
  • Contribute to new regional and national business opportunities and pitches.
  • Requirement to sometimes travel to customer locations, as and when required.
  • Ensure compliance within internal processes and procedures.

Requirements of the Sustainability & Waste Management – Technical Lead:

  • Ideally degree educated, within engineering or supply chain disciplines
  • Strong understanding of lean manufacturing, supply chain methodology, principles of sustainable manufacturing and industrial production processes
  • Ideally possess working knowledge of electric powertrain components (Batteries and eDrives), how they are manufactured and operated.
  • A proactive approach to problem solving, ability to generate new ideas or advise on best practice
  • Comfortable to guide and mentor other team members where necessary
  • An unfaltering attention to detail - Generating quality work outputs for the customer every time
  • Excellent written communication and the ability to understand the audience
  • The ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times
  • Competent in the use of Office365 and presenting complex data in easy-to understand ways
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • The ability to work to tight and sometimes conflicting deadlines
  • An entrepreneurial flair that shows an understanding of true value
